OTT vs Theatre: A War Won?
"Wouldn't that money bring a meal to my family's table?" said a surprised, yet friendly 50-something man diligently guarding the gates of Jyoti Nivas College Autonomous.
When shown the prices of tickets to movies in nearby theatres, 4 out of 5 times, working men and women were shocked at how "ridiculously high" they were. The aim was to have a recreation that didn't leave them doubting the source of their next meal. Both men and women who are toeing the line between survival and provision agree that theatres aren't their first choice when watching a movie. On the other hand, most youth and working adults tend to make their decision on where to watch the movie based on choice and not compulsion.
''For movies like Oppenheimer and The Meg 2, I chose to watch it in a theatre because a lot of the thrill and fun lies in the big screen and cheering audience.'' said an undergraduate student
from JNC Autonomous.
OTT refers to an 'Over-The-Top' platform that streams content over the internet. Popular ones include Netflix, YouTube and Amazon Prime.
The comfort of watching a movie at home, or in a location of your preference is a luxury most people want. From things like pausing the movie whenever you like for washroom breaks to choosing to switch movies when one gets a little too boring. OTT platforms have come a long way and have added very timely and convenient updates to make an already amazing experience even better.
The film industry is still very much alive, it's crucial to remember that. Cinemas are steadily adjusting to the shifting environment, despite the fact that attendance at movie theatres has significantly decreased. The use of IMAX and 3D technology has become increasingly common in theatres to provide a more immersive watching experience. A wider variety of content, including live events, sports broadcasts, and even video game competitions, has recently begun to be offered.
To each his own.
