'The Blantant Injustice!'
Stuti Arun
Should the size of spoons be universalized? Yes, absolutely! To think of the unimaginable pain one must go through every time a recipe is watched and one stands before their cutlery thinking, "Which one of these most fits the 'one tablespoon measure?"
Oh, the number of cakes ruined! The number of dishes with their tastes forever altered simply because my spoon was slightly different than theirs! The blatant injustice shocks me! How is it that we all purchase spoons, but the product chosen and received is different? On what basis are we to know if our spoon belongs in a world full of different sizes, colours, and purposes? How is it that we are so uninformed of a tool we so often use and could not go a day without?
When invited to fancy dinners and restaurants with important people, is it my fault for not knowing which spoon to use, or is it my upbringing that left me devoid of this knowledge? Is it my responsibility to inform myself of this, or is someone to teach me?
As a generation holding the power to break cycles, we need to understand that instructions, however specific, require the user to have the same resources as the instructor. As citizens of an ever-changing and evolving world, we would be ignorant not to inform ourselves of what is expected of us.
Of all the spoons in the world, how are we to choose a generic set of spoons that works for everyone? Well, if we could do it with constitutions, we can do it with spoons. Although, this time around, there will be no spoon intentionally overlooked!
A teaspoon, a tablespoon, a stirring spoon, a serving spoon—everything! We need to have the parameters and the laws written down; how else are we to know what to use in what situation?
Having sufficient information to make a decision about wielding the right tool at the right time is essential. How could we possibly thrive in a world that cares not of giving its people a common starting point?
So, next time you bring out the chef in you and stand wondering which spoon to measure your ingredients with, ask yourself this: Should spoon sizes be universalized?
